Farm Shares Open for 2018
A little about our Farm and Shares…
Sunstone Farm in Stonington, CT is offering more farm share slots this year. Conveniently located on North Anguilla Rd off of Pequot Trail and 184, the farm is close to residents in Pawcatuck, N. Stonington, Mystic, and Westerly. Pick ups available on farm and at the Denison Pequotsepos Farmers Market on Sundays.
Our garden is free of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and herbisides, instead we use organic techniques like mulching, cover cropping, crop rotation and composting to keep down the weeds and grow healthy plants. We grow a wide variety of crops from lettuce to butternut squash and supply our share members from May to October with delicious veggies.
In addition to vegetables, we are experimenting with honey, heritage breed pigs, maple syrup, jam, jelly, teas, flowers, and goat milk soap production which often gets passed onto our share members in thier weekly boxes. We will also be offering weekly recipe cards to accomany any new veggies you may encounter and give you ideas for pairings and preservation.
The cost weekly is less than going out to eat once a week and is a great investment in yourself and your community!

What is a Farm Share?
Paying for a seasons worth of veggies in the spring then recieving weekly boxes of food! It is a valuable partnership between the farmer and consumer that links our community to local produce and an appreciation for our environment as well as an investment in a small farm that everyone can benefit from for years to come.
Why is it good for the farmer?
It helps cover expensive spring startup costs like the seed order, equipment, and tools as well as make personal connections with our customers.
Why is it good for the Share Member?
You’re supporting your local food economy, the continuation of farm skills, soil preservation, while getting a first hand experince of where your food comes from and making healthy, seasonal choices for you and your family.
What is included in a Farm Share?
A weekly box of food includes 6-8 different farm products. It will mainly be veggies but could also include berries, Microgreens, fruit, goat milk soap, herbs, tea, honey, or maple syrup. We do a lot of experimentation on the farm and are excited to share our products with you! You also recieve weekly ‘plant profiles’ to help you use what you get! The profiles include recipes, food/ drink pairings and preservation methods.
Remember to go into a farm share with an open mind! You may get something you’ve never had before or a lot of something. Approach it as an opportunity to try something new!
I looked forward to the box each week as if it were Christmas. I LOVED receiving the fresh flowers because it is very rare that I splurge on them for myself and they lift the spirits each and every time you look at them.
You have a real talent for combining the blooms and greens that is unmatched by the local supermarkets, so the bouquets were a real pleasure.
I enjoyed the herb bouquets, too. I would chop them and add them to pitchers of water and that made even my water special. One week we received sprouts and they were fabulous.
The vegetables and greens that we received were so fresh and because we were unfamiliar with some of them, expanded our culinary repertoire and greatly increased our experimentation.” -Ellie
